WAHRAN 2004

An Algerian Youth (March 2023)

Leïla Larabi Touati

Short documentary 30′ – Oran (Algeria) in 2004

Oran 2004. Four Parisian friends: Virginie, Clotilde, Leïla and Mohamed are on vacation in Algeria. Their friends Yazid, Idir, Fethi and other young people from a local association take them on a road trip through the Oran region: camping at Madagh beach; visiting sites commemorating the independence’s war; visiting the large open-air theater – which revives the memory of the murder of Rai singer Cheb Hasni in 1994 – and other emblematic sites of this country still under construction, but finally out of the « black decade » of the 90s!

Director’s statement : I shot this film during the summer of 2004, with light devices and in the manner of direct cinema, without knowing what was going to happen in the streets of Oran. I was already impressed by the contrast between a particularly degraded city and the fabulous joy of our young Algerian friends. This new generation of Algerians, who nevertheless had a childhood traumatized by the civil war during the 90’s, seems to be the most beautiful resource of contemporary Algeria. They talk to us (frenchs on vacation) about history, politics, corruption… even if words are lacking to address the assassination of the Raï singer Cheb Hasni in 1994. And on the side of the bodies, they sing, they laugh and they dance, freely between girls and boys, as in a trivial American feel good movie; which testifies to the universal character of this youth carrying a great vitality. As shown in the long dance sequence that punctuates the film. So, it is not surprising to know that they are the ones who will support the Hirak in 2019, this peaceful protest movement that put an end to Bouteflika’s regime ; not without humorous speeches and slogans!

Portrait of an Algerian youth at the end of the « Dark Decade » of the 90s in Algeria

Oran 2004.
